I have been hunting through the web today as we are going for Christmas and New Year. On the yllas.fi website guestbook it mentions fireworks over the lake at midnight. There is also skiing from 7pm until midnight with free lifts.

Have just come back from Yllas where we stayed at the Saaga Hotel for Xmas.

Re the fireworks, we had thm on Xmas night, but they literally lasted 3 - 4 minutes (in fact, we were getting into our outside gear when and missed them altogether by the time we were ready). New Year may be different, but my advise is get into your thermals in plenty of time).

The hotel had a gala diner - basically the same buffet as on other nights except people dressed up and the staff served drinks at the table. Not sure if you can get in on those, but try the restaurant next to the ski lifts- I think that will be lively on New Years Eve.

The ski slopes are flood lit, and open at 10am, then close at 7pm. On New Years Eve, they remain open until midnight and are free. My Advise is book a snow mobile trip out one evening - not sure if you are with kids (over 15%26#39;s only allowed), but they are fantastic fn, and might see the northern lights if it is cold enough and clear.

It gets light around 10am and dark again by 3pm at this time of year so be prepared for long nights. Make sure you take some essentials with you too as you are staying in a cabin. We didn%26#39;t see any shops in Yllas.........

Have fun.

The fireworks on the lake is supposed to be the thing I believe. There was a lot of talk on an earlier thread %26#39;who%26#39;s in yllas for new year?%26#39; about where to go. There is also a list of the shop(that does exist) Jounin opening hours over new year period. The link for shop is http://www.jouninkauppa.com/showpage.php?id=2

In the Lapp village the restaurant Poro is supposed to be very good food and there is a father christmas next door from 6-8pm on NYE from memory. You can book by e-mail.

We don%26#39;t arrive until Sunday night at about 8pm but have been told there is a snack kiosk where we can buy milk etc.
