Rovaniemi Trip Dec 19th

Hi Everyone ,

I%26#39;m off to Rovaniemi with my 14 year old son on Dec 19th ..anddd like everyone else we%26#39;re hoping there will be snow . I%26#39;ve read somewhere on the forum that although the city itself might not have much snow right now , there are other places in Rovaniemi that have .

We%26#39;re going with First Choice and so have a few excursions included but i%26#39;m wondering how easy it is to get out of the city and into more snowy areas for the times we%26#39;re left to our own devices . I don%26#39;t want to hire a car , would be too scared to drive if i don%26#39;t know where i%26#39;m going !!

I%26#39;ve read that although we%26#39;ll be in the city ( albeit a small one ) we%26#39;re only a stones throw from the open wilderness ...can i ask how literal that is ?..... If the city has no snow when we go could we walk a mile or so and find a good place to have a few snowball fights and just mess about ?

We would be very grateful for any info anyone might have .

Hi!

Yes, there aren´t that much snow in town center. It is also icy and dirty here as they put sand on roads. There is more snow up in the hills. The nearest hill is Ounasvaara on the other side of the river. You can freely walk in the forest.

Well, I think there will be some snow in parks too. There is a park on the other side of the river and in winter it is very quiet there. You could try that.

You could also go by bus 8 to Santa Claus Village. At the moment the landscape is more snowy there than in town.

Hi, i am in Rovaniemi on Saturday - and again i presume there is alot of snow outside the town - as the webcams are showing not a great deal in town.

i have various excursions booked with snow mobiles and reindeer etc - again i presume these are held 20 or so km out of town and there is plenty of snow??

please let me know (fingers crossed).

Yes, I think there is plenty of snow in those activity sites. They usually bring extra snow to those sites too.

Btw today the official snow depth at Rovaniemi airport is 19 cm. Local airport is up on a hill so the landscape looks very pretty there at the moment.

thanks for that - have been a little concerned the last week or so. You see webcam shots of the City, which doesnt show snow. The main reason i am visiting you (apart from Santa) is that my 5 year old daughter has never seen snow before (i live in Dubai in the middle east).

i will feel a little better flying over now then :)

they should have webcams %26#39;outside%26#39; the city - so people do not worry about the lack of snow :)

where did you find out the information on the depth of snow at the airport?? is there a weblink i can check-out?

About the snow depth: I got the information from this site that has the weather data of the local weather station situated at the airport. Unfortunately it is only in Finnish.

Lumen syvyys 13.12. klo 08.00: 19 cm = snow depth on December 13th at 8 am 19 cm.

It seems that tomorrow is going to be 0 - +1C, but we might get some snow too. Still I hope it is not too warm so that you can see snowy trees too. Also it looks like there will be quite warm next Tuesday.

Have just returned from Rovaniemi! Please dont worry, you will have a FANTASTIC time Im sure...I have fallen completely in love with the place and there is PLENTY of snow!!
