help??? I'm totally confused

I am trying to plan atrip to lapland in December 2008.

So far I have been advised to go to Saaskarela instead of Rovaniemi but on this forum someone else has been advised to go to Levi or Yilas. We are adults, not interested in the skiing at all, we want to do the snowmobiles , the reindeer, the huskies and if there was a santas village of some sort that would be great. We are only going for about 3 or 4 days. This will be a once in a lifetime trip for us as we come from New Zealand. We want to see snow and I gather that Rovaniemi is unreliable for snow. Is there likely to be snow on the outskirts of Rov where the safaris go to or should we be going to levi , saaskarela or Yllas.Any suggestion at any of these places for accommodation. We dont need luxury, we just want a warm bed to sleep in at night. Any hostels, back packers with bathrooms or other suggestions.

Levi is probably the livelier of the resorts, so may be more suited to adults

Do you have to go in December or could you go feb/march when the snow is more guaranteed?

I recommend Levi or Ylläs. In Levi there are all activities available also quite near village. Also you can choose multiactivity safari if you don%26#39;t have a lot of time to spend in Lapland. Look at Aurora santa safari (incl. snowmobile, reindeers and Santa). In Levi there are also so called first snow routes for snowmobile so you can go for safari if there are more than 10 cm snow.

thanks for the feedback so far. No unfortunately we can only go in late december as this is part of a much bigger trip and this is the free time in between other destinations. The multi safari option sounds quite appealing, I%26#39;ll look into that abit more. What is the likilhood of snow in Evi in late December compared to say Rovaniemi and Saariselka?

can someone tell me what the website address is for aurora safaris. I cant find it anywhere. This is getting too hard for me to work ut. I have no idea about these places and so cant figure out where we should be going to for a one and only short visit to lapland. Not interested in skiing, dont have kids with us, not party animals either past that stage of our lives) we are just tourists that wnat to experience what lapland is famous for, the reindeer, snowmobiles, huskys and santa

If you go to the levi website www.levi.fi, then you will find an a-z option which shows the services they have available- There are a number of safari operators/ snowmobile adventures/husky rides etc for you to choose from.

When you arrive in Levi the safari operators are all close to the centre so you will be able to see them.

On the www.levi.fi website you will also see contact details for their tourist information- the people here are very helpful.

I would recommend Levi as it is only 15 mins from Kittila airport, but more importantly there is lots to do for the non skier.

We returned from Levi on 23 Dec. It didn%26#39;t snow much whilst we were there but there%26#39;s still lots of snow on the ground.

I hope you have a fab time

Saariselkä is the most %26quot;adult%26quot; place of these. And it is NOT famous for its downhill skiing (although the cross-country skiing is still great). Rovaniemi is a city while Levi along with Ylläs (Äkäslompolo side) probably has the most activities and the most families. Otherwise Ylläs is the quietest of the lot and the most original %26quot;Lappish%26quot;.

So I would recommend Rovaniemi or Saariselkä for adults that are not interested in skiing. And Saariselkä would be much more snow-sure.

Hi 9

I think if you what to do reindeer, huskies, and you must do snowmobiles, Akaslompolo would without doubt be the place to go, Akas is a really beautiful village, small, quiet, friendly, where you can do all the activities you mention. Plus in less than 5minutes you can be in the snowy forest or on the frozen lake.

I remember pondering on just the things you are, but was so pleased we picked Akaslompolo, it was just how I hoped it would be.

To look at some cabins try www.yllas-travel-service.fi

Also the Yllas home page, i can%26#39;t remember the web address.

Hi

We took a day trip to rovaniemi and had the most utterly dissapointing day due to lack of snow and very short rides.this year we are planning to go back to lapland but like you are looking for somewhere hopefully that will have more snow.not sure which resort to try but very much like the idea of yylas.

Yllas is a magical place, you won%26#39;t go far wrong if you choose there.
