Our family originates from Simo in Lapland. Their surname is Mutanen. Do you say it as MOO ta nen or Mew ta nen or other? Accent where? Is Simo , See Mo?
If anyone can help, I would be most grateful.
If there is anyone from Finland that knows if Mutanen has any local meaning, that would be beyond awesome.
Kiitos!
Oh, why I am asking is that they changed their name to Erickson when they immigrated to the US. No one alive remembers how it%26#39;s spoken.
also, if I may ask, where is the largest town near to Simo to arrive for visit?
Onnellista uutta vuotta!!

Hi!
In Finnish Mutanen is pronounced like this:
%26#39;mu%26#39; = [mu], i.e. %26#39;u%26#39; is like %26#39;oo%26#39; in %26#39;good%26#39;
%26#39;ta%26#39; = [ta], i.e. %26#39;a%26#39; is like %26#39;o%26#39; in %26#39;sound%26#39;
%26#39;nen%26#39; = [nen], i.e. %26#39;ne%26#39; is like %26#39;ne%26#39; in %26#39;net%26#39;
Simo is pronounced like this:
%26#39;si%26#39; = [si], i.e. %26#39;si%26#39; is like %26#39;si%26#39; in %26#39;six%26#39;
%26#39;mo%26#39; = [mo], i.e. %26#39;mo%26#39; is like %26#39;mo%26#39; in %26#39;montreal%26#39;
Hopefully you got it! :)
Muta means mud in Finnish and %26#39;nen%26#39; is diminutive (a very common ending in Finnish surnames).
Mutanen is thus like %26quot;small mud%26quot;. :)
Simo is located at the coastline between Oulu and Kemi cities in quite north (although the people living there probably think it%26#39;s actually central Finland :).
Oulu is a major Finnish city with excellent flight connections from Helsinki so it%26#39;s very easy to get there. From Oulu it%26#39;s about 80 km drive to Simo.
Please note that Simo is then only something like 150 km from the arctic circle so I would recommend you to consider a trip to Finnish Lapland once you get there!

Forgot to mention that the accent in Finnish is always in the first syllable, i.e. here at %26#39;Mu%26#39;.

Excellent TampereMan. This just for curiosity.
I think it’s something like this:
Mu - like a cow say moo but shortly.
Ta - quite much like in word tabulate.
Ne -n - like for example in word nail.
Accent in first byte but not very strongly.
Muta mean mud and termination –nen could be in this case a diminutive but it’s really prevalent in names from Savonia and they say it’s rank of a noble of savonian people ;-)
Kemi is nearest town from Simo (20km) and Oulu another and much bigger approx. 80km. Both have good connections from Helsinki.
Simo is part of reindeer management area and it can say to be part of Lapland on my mind.

So, our family name is %26quot;Mud%26quot; LOL!
Excellent response and information. More than I had hoped!
I lived near the Arctic Circle in Fairbanks for 15 years. BTW. I wonder if the climate is the same. As coastal, perhaps not.
Our Grandfather, Nikola Mutanen WALKED from Valdez, Ak to Fairbanks in 1907! Sturdy bunch, the Laplanders!
Now Nikola Mutanen sounds more Slavic, yes?
Other Grandfather was Kalle Jaanus.
I know this isn%26#39;t a genealogy forum, so I will close.
Kiitos!!

It%26#39;s great to be able to help!
