thanks for that. I%26#39;ll go check it out now and might come back with questions. can I ask for more advice please.We are a young at heart couple in our late 40%26#39;s. We are coming along way to visit lapland. We are NOT interested in skiing as we are not skiers. We are looking for the winter snowy experience, a ridfe on a snowmobile, hisky ride, maybe a santa village. Initaially we looked at Rovaniemi as that offers all that except that snow is abit thin on the ground there. We would love to see the trees wilting under the weight of the snow, maybe go up a chairlift for a view. Are you getting the picture? I have considered Saareselka but went off that as it seems to be totally skiing orientated with few options n accommodation. Maybe Yllas is the samre. Any other suggestions.We are not after great night lifer, just a nice meal, a night safari might be nice too. Our trip is planned for around 16-20 december.We would appreciate any advice please.

Yllas is what you are looking for - the skiing is 10 mins away from yllas (the akaslompo side) so the village itself is not fully of people on skiis if you know what I mean, the willage is sprawled out and is made up of a few hotels, resturants and shops which are spread out over a mile of so, the self catering cabins are all over the place but again, spread out a lot, you never feel like you are in a residental street or anything like that, just walking about yllas will give you that magical feel I think you are looking for, it%26#39;s quiet and tasteful, check out finnishlakesidecabins.com too for more accommodation choices, be careful where you book as some are a long way out from the village centre

you can also get all the trips you want there too, however the santa park in rovi is not recommended (tacky)

just had a thought - as that is a busy week you may find it problematic to get a short stay (you may have to book for a week) so I would suggest that you try to get it sorted out asap, there are other places like ownersdirect and villarentals that you can look at too, they are sights where people hire out their cabins/villas privately (all over the world) good luck and let us know how you get on

Saariselka is certainly not a ski ing only orientated resort. It is only just being developed as such and is only visited by one ski company from the Uk whereas several go to Yllas and Levi. We have just returned from our second trip to Saariselka and the rep said it is much less commercialised than Levi and to a lesser extent even Yllas. The limited ski runs and ski school are a bus ride out of the village which offers the longest toboggan run in Europe and all the traditional activities eg huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles. You can catch the free bus to the hotel nearby that has both glass and snow iglooos for a guided tour or even spend a night there. A Finnish lady also told us about going to Kiilopaa on the free bus to see/try out the smoke sauna and natural outside plunge pool. Didn%26#39;t have time to do this but sounds interesting for our next visit. The cross country ski runs can be walked or as we did done by kick sled hired for 5 euros for 24 hours along beautiful floodlit paths in the forest. Yes there are skiers but they are a small part of the overall picture and are bound to be there, it is a snowy place after all. Accomodation is limited as it is a small place, the hotels are The Holiday Club, Rikeiolina, Keippi and Tunturi and they all have websites. There are also log cabins and apartments available.

If you contact smiley sid, she has been to both Saariselka and Levi and says Saari is more magical, although I believe Yllas is quieter than Levi.

In Yllas there are signs asking people not to walk or sledge along the cross country ski tracks. Is this not the same in Saariselka? I know in Yllas the Finnish people get annoyed with the foreign visitors using the tracks for other than skiing and as a cross country skier myself, I agree. These tracks have to be maintained and kept safe and recently I was met by a boy sledging down the track as I was attempting a hill and consequently fell.

|||

We weren%26#39;t toboganning but on the kick sleds with narrow skis underneath that you control like skis and when we walked it was in the snow to the side of the tracks, just following the routes so we didn%26#39;t get lost. Everyone we met were very friendly so I%26#39;m sure someone would have put us straight if we were doing wrong. I agree that toboggans etc whizzing along would spoil the ambience and the prepared surfaces.

so if the walkers are not supposed to use the paths that the cross country skiiers use then where are we to walk - on the road?

from what I gathered (and looking at the signs), these paths are for the use of everyone and the walkers are to keep off the ski tracks

agree with you poe.tuesday. We were careful not to go in the cross country skiers tracks. Surely it is safer to follow the trails than wander aimlessly in the forest and get lost. Anyway the Finns themselves are heavily into Nordic walking which just involves walking boots and ski poles. At the start of the cross country trails there was a lot of information about Nordic walking, various paces etc for optimum exercise and they are to use the tracks which were very wide as seen on the Saari webcam so room for all without getting in others way
