Driving between Luosto and Rovaniemi in winter (Christmas)

Hi, we are going to Luosto for Christmas. We would like to spend a day trip to Rovaniemi (Santa Claus Village in particular). Since there is no agent running day tour between Rovaniemi and Luosto and there will be almost %26quot;NO%26quot; public transportation during 24 -26 Dec, we are thinking about to rent a car to make that day trip. Would anyone be so kind to advise if it is possible for us as tourist to drive between Rovaniemi and Luosto in winter time? We don%26#39;t have any experience in driving in the Artic Circle…..

If you are going just to see Santa Claus Village, i wouldn%26#39;t bother. We went on way back to airport and it wasn%26#39;t up to much. We had 1hr 30mins there and we had looked round the lot in 30mins.

Santa Claus village is near airport (Rovaniemi) so maybe it is possible to visit there before your departure home. If you can go there by public transfer it is only 5 minutes taxi way to airport.

In all cars there are winter tyres. Normally the road between Rovaniemi and Luosto is in good condition. But ofcourse you never know what kind of weather it is.

One last question - How much does a taxi ride cost (one way) ? Is there a taxi stand in Santa Claus Village so that I dont have to page one on return ?

Thanks all for your input !

We had a hire car last winter and drove that route…we found the road is well maintained and had no problems. We also enjoyed Santa’s Village (not to be confused with Santa’s Park)……Santa’s Village is free and it is free to see Santa….you pay for the photos if you want them. I’ve read a few negative comments but really as a free Santa experience it is pretty good…..the kids loved seeing Santa’s post office, crossing the artic circle and of course meeting the man himself. Our boy is still talking about it now this Christmas.

Thanks again for all of your input ! I wish all of you a Merry Christmas !

No problems driving in Lapland. The terrain is not mountaineous and the roads are fairly good even in winter. All rental cars have winter tyres, most with studs. The conditions are not Alpine in any means. Even when it snows, the snow comes in in rather small quantities so does not block the roads.

Only thing you should remember, is to keep your distance. On an icy road you need more time to halt your car.

BTW check the opening hours for everything during 24-26th Dec.
