Dark - but how dark??

Hi all. I%26#39;ve been reading the forum posts with interest, but there%26#39;s one topic I haven%26#39;t found.

We know it%26#39;s likely to be very cold - but I wonder, is it also really dark?

I mean, we are north of the Arctic Circle and I%26#39;m going to be in Yllas on the shortest day of the year!

So, er, does the sun rise?

How long will we be able to be outside for?

If we ski in the morning (I think we are skiing 10.30 - 12.00 or so) and then take a trip in the afternoon (most seem to start at 2pm) - will we actually be outside in the dark??!?

I%26#39;m afraid that we%26#39;re going to end up cooped up in the hotel for most of the day since it%26#39;ll be dark outside!

Can anyone advise?

I%26#39;m assuming that if we travelled in, say, March, that we%26#39;d end up with oodles of daylight - but we%26#39;ll be there towards the end of December instead - so am a bit worried.

Cheers.

we went last friday and arrived to a grey light , bit like our dusk , it was pitch black by 3pm.

Thanks sunshinelinks. But does that mean that you went in at 3pm - and that was it?

I think that we%26#39;ll end up spending lots of time in the hotel (Yllas Saaga) swimming pool - or playing endless games of Uno or Happy Families with the children...

|||

No we didnt go in at 3pm , the areas are lit with big tee pees and open log fires and candles form a path way so you can see! You wont have to go in when it gets dark , kids were making snowmen ect!

|||

Phew!

Thank you!

The sun doesn%26#39;t rise but you get a grey light from about 10am until 3pm when you get the blue moment (the sky and snow are the same colour) really beautiful.

It wasn%26#39;t that cold when we were there 2nd-5th December. When we arrived it was -15 but the 3 other days only between -2 and -5, so not what I would call cold.

Believe me you will not stay in your rooms, so much to see and do and everywhere so well lit.

We were outside until 10pm every night with the kids no problems and they never got cold, thermal suits so warm.

Hope this helps.

You lose all aspect of time at first because of the darkness, but you get used to it.

The ski slopes are lit really well and it%26#39;s lovely to ski in the dark (no-one sees when you fall over)!

We snowmobiled at night in search of the northern lights which was brilliant.

I repeat what everyone else, you definitely won%26#39;t be cooped up indoors all day. Though you%26#39;ll be thankful for your bed at the end of the day because it%26#39;s a fun but exhausting holiday.

We have just returned and weren%26#39;t really indoors alot. We stayed in apartments at Snow Elf and if we weren%26#39;t on taster events we spent a lot of time sledging down a road outside our room or walking round the area, and only went in for the toilet and a drink of hot chocolate. Even after dinner we were out sledging, sometimes until 11pm. Even though it%26#39;s dark it was still bright and cheerful with Christmas lights on and candles along paths etc. Plus there are plenty of lights amongst the trees etc.

Got back yesterday, done nothing but rain and it%26#39;s so dismal and gloomy.

I%26#39;m convinced! And I can%26#39;t wait!

Have been looking at the webcam throughout the day and am envious of the people in the pictures - who are actually on holiday now as I watch from my computer!

Still trying to find cheap children%26#39;s silk socks and glove liners - though did just find myself a £6.99 silk balaclava on eBay.

Have not done much work today - just want to prepare for my holiday!
