Hi, I want to go to lapland with my kids aged 8 %26amp; 4 in December next year but just don%26#39;t know where to start. A 2 nights 3 day trip, preferably from Southampton or Bournemouth Airport. BUT where to go is just baffling me. I don%26#39;t want anywhere really commercialised where my 8 year old will spot the false beard on Santa a mile off. I figure this is his last year as a %26quot;believer%26quot; and want to make it really special. Can anyone recommend some lovely cosy log cabins to stay in?
I have been looking at Transun company, any advice?
Thanks for all your help.

Hi.
We usually go to Akaslompolo, which is a very pretty village, we%26#39;ve been in December and there has always been plenty of snow.
I know quite a few people visit Rovaniemi, which is a lot further south and for the last few times in December, it has not had much snow, so, The Yllas area is a better choice, with almost!!!! guaranteed snow, plus Akas has a really good supermarket were you can get most things you will need.
But above all, a very beautiful place.

Hi Kajaski
I went this yar with my kids, who are also aged 8 and 4. I wanted pretty much the same things as you - uncommercialised, authentic etc as my 8 year old son is pretty smart and I also thought he%26#39;d need something pretty convincing.
We went with a small specialist operator - Magic of Lapland - and they were just fantastic. We were in small groups (so didn%26#39;t feel like a big tour party), stayed in Yllasjarvi which is a small village, and all the activities were out in the forest with just a few other families there (and nobody from other tour operators). My son really believes he has met the real Father Christmas (and he did check the beard! - but told me that he knew he was meeting the %26#39;real one%26#39; as his beard wasn%26#39;t false). The whole Father Christmas visit was magical - in a little cabin in the middle of the forest, with no-one else around, and we got to spend 10-15 minutes with him while he read the kids the letters they had sent him, they drew pictures with quill pens in his big book, got presents from him etc. I think we may even get another year or two of believing as a result.
The rest of the trip was fantastic as well - husky rides, snowmobile safari, reindeer safari, ice hotel, snow shoe walking, sledging etc. There are options to stay in log cabins or in the hotel. They don%26#39;t fly from Southampton but they do go from Gatwick. I think they are one of the most expensive operators, but partly because of the small groups, more personal experience etc - for me it was worth every penny and gave us all some unbelieveable memories.

Please please consider going for longer! Last year we had a four night stay and this year a 5 night stay.We still filled the days and there was still plenty we could have done! Remember If you are slightly delayed or fly later in the day thats one day gone without doing anything! I have now been to Yllas and Levi For you I think Yllas,Akaslompolo would be perfect!

Yes I would go for longer and arrange all your own activities when you are there.

Glad you had a great holiday,Where next for you all then? Will you be booking earlier this time as sounds like its going to be a yearly event now that you can ski!!

Hi Kajaski,
We were first timers to Lapland this year and wanted the same things as you (Children aged 6 %26amp; 4). My advice would be to avoid the big centres and %26quot;Santa Villages%26quot; and go for a small tour operator somewhere remote. I%26#39;ve heard mixed messages from people that did the former. For what it%26#39;s worth we went with Emagine to Iso-Syote %26amp; stayed in the fantastic log cabins. I would absolutely recommend this to you (magical fell-top location in the middle of nowhere), but unfortunately they only fly from Manchester. I think you should also think about 3 nights rather than 2 so that you get 2 days for trips etc - because of the short daylight hours the days you travel are pretty much written off %26amp; you will want to be there at least 2 days just to play in the snow. We %26quot;found%26quot; Santa in his hut in the forest (by reindeer sleigh) one family at a time, which was really well done. There were older children on our party and we could tell from their expressions that they thought this was the real deal so I wouldn%26#39;t worry about your older child. I think that you get what you pay for I%26#39;m afraid but I would encourage you to splash out - it%26#39;s a once-in-a-lifetime trip after all!

Bluny ...Not only did we go away with the Lapland bug we also caught the skiing bug...it%26#39;s double trouble!!
Hubby would like to return in at half term,
my bruises may have faded by then. LOL.

We never book more than 7/8 weeks in advance!!
I hope you are well and Happy New Year to you!!

Hi Kim
And a happy new year to you all to.
Yes it certainly gets you both ways in Lapland with the skiing and safaris it just great.
The way I look at it is that we get sun here but not much snow(although some forecasted for us this evening and shall believe it when I see it).
We to are looking for a cheap lastminute deal to lapland In Feb half term as desperately want to go back again,Well hubby does also as he loves his skiing as do the girls.I like it to but not as much as them and maybe because they are better than me and leave me behind at the top the whole time.
Anyway looking really for Yllas or saaraselka but will take whatever comes along.
We have booked for Yllas for new year already but kinda cant wait to get back!
Just hope they get a really good snowfall again over the next few weeks.

yep me too...looking for half term deals ,at the moment they look too expensive !! the last trip pushed the bank balance!! If you see any great deals let me know....we would consider elsewhere, but Finland would be our first choice!
