Warning to those thinking of having ski lessons in the UK!

Inghams will not allow you in their %26#39;learn to ski %26#39;classes, if you have done any previous skiing at all.

We found this out at a very costly £254 on top of the money we had paid in the UK where we pre-booked the ski package :-(

We had very briefly skied 10 years ago (when our son was only 5), when the Inghams rep found this out she told us we had 2 choices:

1) Take our skies and go off on our own (very dangerous in my opinion)

2) Pay an extra £254 and move up to intemediate classes (again very dangerous as they were having their lessons half way up a very busy RED run)

She told us even if you have so much as had a pair of ski boots on they you cannot go into the beginners classes!!!

Sorry rant over.

Hi,

I would like to comment on that.

Every Ski Resort give classes, you can join them when you get there.

The price is far cheaper. 60 euros for 100 minutes, that is 3 hours, and they have practice slopes too.

All these Tour companies will do anything to get money.

Go to any Ski area, and take private lessons in small groups, you will be amazed on what you learn in a few hours. It is not as if you can Alpine ski in Finland / Lapland, but its the best place to learn.

Snowboading is easier.

But good luck,

So typical of Inghams, all nicey nicey pre booking, then once you%26#39;ve paid your money and balance etc the whole attitude changes.

They can be so bloody unhelpful. Wait til you get to resort and meet the reps ..... then the fun begins apparently !!!!

Money,money,money

The rep was the problem!

The annoying things is there was 2 other women in the same position as me but they had been allowed in presumably because they had a different Inghams rep book them in!

These 2 ladies were quite good skiers but had lost their confidence so wanted to start at the beginning.

Trust me to get the jobsworth grrrrrrrr......

It doesn%26#39;t help that you land at Kittilia airport at 7pm then have to collect your skies between 9 - 10pm, that%26#39;s the last thing you want to do after a long drive to Gatwick, half a day at the airport, and a 3 hour flight especially if you are self-catering and have to also sort out food upon arrival at Levi.

|||

Yes it is a pain when you have to collect your skis at certain times and not forgeting of course the welcome meeting you have to sit through if you have prebooked any trips.Any one that is just hiring skis you can ask your rep for your tickets and turn up when you like to collect them .We just collect our skis in levi when we like and do not stick to the given times as it is manic in there with everyone turning up to be fitted with boots and ski etc.Really you do not need to use your rep other than them doing a head count and collecting your tickets for your safari that you have booked with them.

I%26#39;m assuming that you%26#39;re referring to last season - but in the 2007/08 season brochures and online, they make it VERY clear that the learn to ski pacakge is for people with absolutely no experinec even on dry slopes in the UK. Assuming those warnings weren%26#39;t there last season, looks like they%26#39;ve learnt and improved the communication

|||

what is someone may have had one go on a dry slope many moons ago does not mean that they are not suitable for the learn to ski package?

surely the best people to know their level and what they require is the customer, not the people selling the lessons?

|||

Forgot to add that after paying the extra £245, we turned up for lessons in the intermediate class, the Finnish instructor said there was no way could we go into that class and put us straight back into the %26#39;learn to ski%26#39; lessons.

We complained to Inghams but they refused to refund us the money!!!

|||

that%26#39;s naughty, did you not complain to ABTA?

|||

Not a lot we could do, because in the brochure it does say (in very small writing) complete learners only

TBH I think it%26#39;s a bit of a grey area, but we didn%26#39;t have a leg to stand on :-(

Our travel agent was absolutely disgusted, and did plead our case, but they wouldn%26#39;t listen to her either!

Clearly, in this case, honesty is NOT the best policy. Best stay quiet about any previous skiing - and when you tske to it like a duck to water explain that you are clearly a natural!!
